The first week in September 2013, APAC-Alabama, Inc. completed a major highway-paving project in the Birmingham, Al area significantly ahead of schedule.
Over the last several months, construction crews from APAC-Alabama, Inc., working with a Joint Venture partner, resurfaced a highly traveled section of Interstate 20 east- and westbound between I-20/59 and I- 459. The project, valued at $38.6 million, delivers much-needed repairs to an important local highway.
The project involved milling and overlaying approximately six miles of Interstate 20 and removing the existing concrete pavement on a further four miles, replacing three with full depth asphalt pavement and one with new concrete pavement. Six bridges along the stretch of highway have also been repaired as part of the scope of work.
Interstate 20 is a significant local highway, carrying 74,000 vehicles daily between I-59 and I-459. To minimize traffic disruption, east and westbound lanes were closed down alternately with 90 days being allowed to complete each side. The eastbound work was completed 27 days early and the westbound side 31 days ahead of schedule. During the shutdown periods, crews worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In total, the project required 220,000 tons of hot mix asphalt to be laid. Tarrant and East Thomas Asphalt Plants provided 106,000 tons of material to the laydown crews. Wedowee Quarry provided 10,000 tons of material for the asphalt plant. Alex City Quarry provided 16,000 tons of material for the concrete section of the highway that was built by our sister company, APAC Tennessee.
